Review: JuneHouse Backpack

You ever feel like Instagram giveaways are just fake and meant to promote an account? Like, you’re 98% sure that they never choose a real winner, just a dummy account? Well, you good sir or madam, are wrong. They actually are authentic giveaways and real people win! I know because I won two giveaways within two weeks, and I am pretty sure I am a real person…!

The first Instagram giveaway I won was this beautiful fashion backpack by JuneHouse. Shoutout to my man Hunter Vought for choosing me! (The second one was a phenomenal three-piece safari-inspired collection by Marcel Floruss, but that is for another blog. Shoutout to Marcel, as well!)

I remember exactly where I was when I received the Instagram “winner” notification for the former giveaway. I was in a Clarke Student Association (CSA) Executive Board retreat. And, during the middle of reviewing the constitution, I got the notification. Let me tell you, I was hyped/pumped/ecstatic. I never won a giveaway before, let alone for something of this magnitude.

In General: This fashion backpack literally screams “Kyle Majerus.” It is rose red with light brown leather straps and a white JuneHouse logo that just pop, very high-quality, and minimal in design but with a rediculous amount of storage space and compartments… I mean, there is so much room I fit three days of clothes and necessities inside with room to spare. What is more, the backpack compliments my style perfectly. I can pair this backpack with literally everything I wear — from blue chinos with a mustard sweater and white sneakers (example below) to gray chinos with a black sweater (or white long-sleeve and blue jacket) and dark brown boots. No matter what outfit I am rocking, this backpack only adds to it.

Junehouse bookbag match

Exterior: Just admire the rose red color and the light brown straps. They pair so well together and compliment one another. In addition, the white JuneHouse logo on the front compartment gives this backpack that three-color vibe that y’all know I love to do every single day.

Next, notice the pull-over folds on both the large and small compartments; this is a great fashion niche that not many backpacks can pull off. On the other hand, both side compartments have zippers, which gives the exterior a little diversity.

Finally, the back of this backpack. Oh, my L*rd. I cannot convey how freaking comfortable this backpack is because of the thick pads located on the back and straps. When I visited Chicago last weekend, I walked for hours around Downtown and Lincoln Park with this backpack on, and I did not experience discomfort once. On the contrary, I welcomed the padded feeling on my back and shoulders, it was rather pleasant.

Interior: I. am. in. love. with. this. interior. The number one thing I absolutely adore about this interior is the black, padded, and fleece-lined laptop sleeve. Not only does it comfortably hold my MacBook Pro, but it is also entertaining to stuff your hands down to feel the fleece.

The second detail I love about the interior is the red and black stripes that run along the whole inside. It is such a unique addition to the bag that I have been obsessing over since day one. I think it makes this bag stand out even more because not many backpacks do a design on the inside. I can really only think of Herschel right now…

Next, I like that there are two hidden compartments along both sides of the backpack. They are just perfect for me to store my Warby Parker eyeglasses inside. Further, I can stuff my iPhone in the right one and pull headphones through an opening designed for just that! Not having to hold my iPhone and get to listen to music? Winner, winner, chicken dinner. And, finally, the front compartment has a rose red hook to put my keys on so I don’t lose them. I mean, come on, this backpack has everything.

Overall: I cannot be more content and happy with this backpack. Sure, I did win this backpack, but for roughly $70 on Amazon, I would purchase it in a heartbeat because you really can’t get a better deal; it is high-quality at a low price. My JuneHouse backpack is everything I have ever wanted, and I cannot see myself using a different backpack for a long time. When you see me, look for the rose red color, because it will be with me every step of the way on my life’s journey.

Six Men’s Fashion Instagram Accounts to Follow

People often ask me where I get my fashion inspiration from, and I give them two answers: Pinterest and Instagram. The follow-up question to this always is: “Oh, who do you follow on Instagram for your inspiration?”

Instead of trying to recite whom I follow and explain what each of their distinct styles and aesthetics are, I thought it would be easier and beneficial to just list my top six choices below. (They are in NO particular order; they are all fantastic and have their own unique style.) Each fashion influencer has inspired my sense of style and fashion in some way, shape, or form.

  1. Adam Gallagher — @iamgalla

I first got into men’s fashion when I stumbled upon Adam Gallagher. He is a fashion influencer and blogger from California but currently based in New York City. I was so intrigued by Adam for two reasons: his unique, sophisticated style and his travels. He has traveled literally all over the world, from Japan to Brazil. What is more, he takes outstanding shots in each location in such unique and elegant clothing.

In addition to his Instagram page, he has a blog, which you may all go subscribe to. It is iamgalla.com.

  2. One Dapper Street — @marcelfloruss

When I was in a fashion rut last summer, I happen to discover Marcel — a German-born, New York City-based fashion blogger. Marcel has a unique style; it is a blend of sophisticated and street — hence, “One Dapper Street.” What truly drew me to Marcel was his Youtube channel; he is quite funny, posts high-quality vlogs, and I am obsessed with his apartment and his aesthetic. Marcel gives me inspiration, and that is all I want and need sometimes! He has a blog site, too. Go check him out at onedapperstreet.com.

    IMG_2615

  3. Hunter Vought — @hunter_vought

Ah, Hunter Vought. A rather green fashion influencer and blogger, Hunter has really entered the spotlight in the fashion world lately, in my opinion. I would say this is due to his immediate and kind responses to virtually every comment and DM he gets; his versatility in terms of style — business casual, street style, and preppy; and his frequent blog and Instagram posts. He actually just began a YouTube channel, too. Which I can’t wait to check out!

Oh, and bonus points to him because I won his giveaway for a red JuneHouse backpack. I have only had this backpack for three days, but I cannot convey how obsessed I am with it already. Once I have used it for a few weeks, I will do a review on my blog, so keep on the lookout for that.

Keep up the good work, Hunter. You deserve all that you have coming to you. And, of course, his blog link is huntervought.com.

    IMG_2620

  4. Tim Bryan — @timbryan

Tim Bryan. Oh, what do I say about Tim? Tim is different than the rest because he does not have a blog where he expresses his love for style and what he wears. Instead, Tim is quite active on YouTube, where he posts vlogs, fashion reviews, fashion hauls, style tips and tutorials, and much more.

I have followed Tim since he was a New Yorker, but he is a L.A. man now. Because of this, I have witnessed an intense shift in Tim’s style; he went from the East Coast, New Yorker look to the summer vibes look that is prominent on the West Coast.
    IMG_2616

  5. Ruben Van De Sande — @rubenvandesande

I am rather new to Ruben’s Instagram channel. What I find so interesting and unique about Ruben is that he is not based in the United States like the previous four. Rather, Ruben is based in the Netherlands, which I am obsessed with the Dutch culture and lifestyle, so I love Ruben’s content even more. It is so interesting to see Europeans’ lifestyle, and I think Ruben embodies it well.

    Ruben’s blogsite is rubenvandesande.com.

    IMG_2619

  6. Dimitris Kolonas — @dimitris_kolonas

Just like Ruben, I am very new to Dimitris’s channel — like I only started following him two weeks ago. However, I included Dimitris in this post because he is a consistent and frequent poster on Instagram and because his style is parallel to mine. Dimitris, like myself, is a minimalist when it comes to style. (If you do not know what minimalism is, go read my previous blog post for some insight!)

His looks are simple, versatile, aesthetically pleasing, and unique in their own way. If someone walks down the street rocking the combinations that Dimitris creates, then he or she will definitely turn some heads. When I need new combinations for my minimalist styles, I check out Dimitris’s page first-and-foremost.

The top six accounts are run by fashions influencers who inspire me to dress my best and be proud of my love for fashion. I have watched some of them — like Hunter — grow immensely over the past few months. Others, like Tim, I witnessed a shift in style and aesthetic.

I know I will always follow these accounts, and not just because of their influence over me and my style, but also because I just truly enjoy their content and who they are as people.

Three Must-have Colors in Your Wardrobe

It is 2017, people. It’s time to throw out those graphic Walmart t-shirts and American Eagle jeans you’ve worn for the past four years. They are a part of the past, and it is time to leave them there. With fashion ever-changing and new trends popping up every few months, it can be difficult to keep your wardrobe up-to-date. I thought I would help guide you all in the right direction. I will provide you with the three most versatile colors you need for your wardrobe. This way, you don’t have to keep buying what is “in” because these colors are classic, versatile, and will never go out of style.

1. Navy

I am a huge advocate for the color navy. I wear navy almost every day because is a phenomenal color that it is versatile, eye-catching, and downright classy. What is more, it is the perfect color for every piece of clothing you own – shoes, chinos, shirts, sweaters, suit, etcetera. No matter what, navy pieces of clothing are timeless and can be incorporated into your wardrobe. I, currently, have navy socks, two pairs of navy chinos, a navy v-neck sweater, and a navy rain jacket. I am also looking at getting a navy suit because it is excellent for every occasion. Now, I can incorporate these five pieces of clothing into over 100 outfits. Trust me, it is just that stinking easy. Navy will also always be part of fashion trends, so why not always have it around?

2. Gray

The next color I advise getting your clothes in is gray because it is a wonderful color for every piece of clothing you wear. My two favorite pieces of gray clothing are my gray 484 J.Crew chinos and my Natascha Myers baseball cap. They go well together, too! Nothing like the baseball cap, a light gray sweater, the chinos, and some converse to have a well thought-out, put together look. I encourage you all to get a cap, a sweater, a long-sleeve and a short-sleeve shirt, chinos/pants, and a jacket in gray. Not only do they all pair well together, but they are excellent pieces to pair with black, navy, and white. Just like navy, gray will forever be in fashion.

3. Black

The final must-have color is black. Notice the pattern? The neutral, dark shades I suggest? That is because you simply cannot go wrong with them. They will always be in style. I highly suggest black sweaters and chinos/pants. They can be worn to a more formal event or dressed down for a lunch with a colleague. I wear my H&M black chinos at least twice a week. I love going for a monochromatic look with a black sweater and the black chinos, but then add a pop of white with my sneakers. The other look I normally rock is more random; I will throw on a light gray sweater, black chinos, and my white sneakers. The variety of color makes every piece stand out and a focal point of their own. You really can never go wrong with that.

There you have it, ladies and gentleman. My three must-have color suggestions for your wardrobe. You can wear them for years and years without any worry of them fading in popularity.

Warby Parker: Stockton “Tyler Oakley” Eyeglasses

Just like the rest of my family, I fell victim to poor eyesight. However, I refused to wear eyeglasses for months because I absolutely hated the thought of wearing them every day, but I finally had to suck it up and get my prescription eyeglasses because I could not read anything off in the distance (which is an issue when I am driving!).

So, I went with the free frames that you are allowed to choose from at the local eye clinic, but they did not fit on my face, were uncomfortable, and were pretty hideous. After two years with these miserable eyeglasses, long after I accepted that I would have to suffer wearing them forever because I could not afford the remarkably nice $150-$200 frames, I found Warby Parker.

Warby Parker sells designer eyeglasses and sunglasses for as cheap as $95 flat (there are no taxes OR shipping fees!). Yep, you read that right, designer eyewear for an extremely reasonable price. What is more, they will ship you five home try-on frames of your choice that you may wear for a week and then send back. This way, you can find the pair that fits you perfectly before making your purchase. Oh, did I mention they will do that for free? It is a win-win; you get to find your ideal pair of eyeglasses without paying a cent.

Once I heard about all the great things Warby Parker has to offer, I just knew I had to give them a shot. I started browsing their phenomenal eyeglasses selection and came across the StocktonTyler Oakley” Limited Edition Eyeglasses. They have circular lenses, a curved top bar, a “keyhole with a discreet divot” bridge, and are pure black. The purchase also came with a hard-shelled case, a gray box, and a limited edition gray protector sleeve. I would like to note that these specific eyeglasses are no longer available for purchase because, well, they were limited edition. Do not be disheartened, though! They have many spectacular options to choose from! Just click here to see for yourself.

These eyeglasses are beautiful. They sit perfectly on my face, compliment my facial features, make me look like Harry Potter (according to every single friend of mine…), and go perfectly with my style. I have received countless compliments on these eyeglasses because they are very high-quality and suit me well. I am absolutely satisfied with my purchase, and I actually enjoy putting on a pair of eyeglasses every morning. I will wholeheartedly say this purchase was well worth the $95 I paid.

It truly is incredible how an outstanding designer pair of eyeglasses can be this affordable. Warby Parker really has outdone themselves by offering such great products, and I encourage all of you to check them out when looking at getting new eyeglasses. You will not be disappointed. I know I wasn’t.

Being a Men’s Fashion Advocate

I remember growing up wearing thrift shop jackets, graphic t-shirts from Walmart of Dick’s, and bootcut jeans that were too long and too big.

Then, as I entered college as a freshman (I am a junior now), something in my fashion tastes and preferences changed. I no longer found graphic tees and sweatpants appealing; rather, I was starting to get interested in monochromatic white sneakers, double monk strap dress shoes, collared shirts, chinos, suits, and a myriad of “fashionable” apparel.

With this change in style came a change in whom I was as a person, too. I no longer shopped at stores like Walmart, Kohl’s, and American Eagle (no offense to those who shop there.) Instead, stores like H&M, Zara, Topman, and Nordstrom started catching my eye. This led to a long journey of trying to define my personal “style” – buying clothes, returning them, trying new styles and material… the whole process. Now, I am truly comfortable with my style, which is focused around minimalism and versatility. The below pictures are a few of my fashion inspirations, but definitely not all of them (Lukas Scepanik, Tim Bryan, & Perkins Bien Aime, respectively pictured below).

Now, this post is not about my style evolution, instead, it is about what it is like being a huge men’s fashion advocate. As an advocate, I have noticed people interact with me differently; my interest in men’s fashion companies/magazines have been at an all-time high; my plans for my future after college have changed; I am very picky with my clothing, and I am searching the internet a lot more for inspiration.

When I say people interact with me differently, I mean in a positive way, but there are also instances that people react negatively to my style. Mostly, people compliment me by saying I “look wonderful today” or “have great style.” In fact, someone I recently met admitted she thought I was a professor at our university because I “dressed so nice.” These, as I previously stated, are positive remarks that make me feel good about myself. Although, there are times that people make me feel like I dress too nicely for college. Specifically, the first day of classes at my university, some guy kept staring at my double monk strap dress shoes like he has never seen something so odd in his life. This roller coaster of confidence in my dress style is something I experience with being a men’s fashion advocate.

The second thing I experience as a men’s fashion advocate is my interests in companies that are focused around men’s fashion, e.g., Mr. Porter, Gentleman’s Quarterly, and Real Men Real Style. Mr. Porter is a clothing company that sells high-quality clothing and makes YouTube videos focused on men’s fashion. Gentleman’s Quarterly is a magazine focused on men’s fashion and fashion news. Finally, Real Men Real Style is an online company that gives style tips for men and business tips. I personally enjoy each of them equally and check their sites out every chance I get.

As I previously stated earlier, my future plans for after college have changed because of my interest in men’s style. I previously was interested in teaching high school English, but then I realized that this career choice did not match my interests. Instead, I knew that I wanted to enter a career in public relations or editing for a fashion magazine. Now, I am aware that I must move to a big city if I want this career to happen, and I do have those very intentions once I graduate college. But, alas, if this is my passion I will pursue it by all means.

Since I have a particular style – minimalistic and versatile – I shop at specific stores that sell my “type” of clothing, like H&M, Zara, Topman, Nordstrom, and Uniqlo. The problem with this is that none of these stores are within 70 miles of where I live, so I must shop online and hope they fit, or make a trip to a city. This can get rather pricey with driving or paying for all that shipping, so I usually buy two to three complete outfits whenever I do one or the other. Moreover, these stores are not cheap so I may be spending $40 on just a collared shirt or $55 on a pair of jeans. What’s more, I like my clothes to fit me perfectly, and I will not settle for pants too long or shirts too baggy. From this, I tend to get my clothing tailored if they do not look “right” on me. Let me be the first to tell you, if you have never had an article of clothing tailored, you are missing out. Tailored clothing feel as if they were made solely for you, and once you try it you will never settle for less. Sure I have to pay a little extra for tailoring, but $8 to have pants hemmed and $15 for a shirt to be tapered is worth it in the end.

Finally, as a fashion advocate I am always looking for new inspiration to incorporate into my own wardrobe, and what better place than the internet? Since my newfound love for men’s fashion, I created a Pinterest and have subscribed to multiple YouTube accounts focused around men’s fashion. They are great resources if one ever wants to up their style game. And to be completely honest, I am not ashamed of using them either, I rather enjoy finding new inspirations on Pinterest and the people who post the videos on YouTube.

To sum, this change was not a small one like I thought it would be. I just thought I would dress nicer and that would be the end, but as I have just explained, there is a lot more to it than that.
